Spironolactone was originally developed as a diuretic for patients with hypertension (high blood pressure), edema (fluid retention), and congestive heart failure. By removing excess fluid from the body, it reduces the workload on the heart and lowers blood pressure.

Over time, doctors have also found it beneficial in treating:

• Primary hyperaldosteronism – a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much hormone called aldosterone

• Cirrhosis with ascites – fluid buildup due to liver disease

• Nephrotic syndrome – kidney-related fluid retention

• Hormonal acne – especially in women with PCOS or hormone imbalance

• Hirsutism – unwanted hair growth due to elevated androgens

Because of its anti-androgenic effects, Spironolactone is often used off-label in dermatology for treating persistent or hormonal acne and other hormone-driven skin issues. However, it’s not a first-line treatment for everyone and should only be used under medical supervision.
