Tenofovir acts as a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), which means it interferes with the viral reverse transcriptase enzyme used by both HIV-1 and hepatitis B virus (HBV) to replicate. By stopping this step, the drug reduces the amount of virus in the body and slows the damage to the immune system and the liver.
