What is Novopen 4 (Novo-Nordisk)?

Novopen 4 by Novo-Nordisk is a reusable insulin pen designed to be used with NovoFine disposable needles and PenFill 3 ml insulin cartridges. The pen can deliver insulin doses from 1 to 60 units, in 1-unit increments.

At Online Pharmacy, you can get Novopen 4, packed in single pen packages.

Usage and Indications of Novopen 4 (Novo-Nordisk)

Novopen 4 is not insulin itself, but a delivery device used with Penfill cartridges produced by Novo Nordisk. The pen features a low injection force, 1-unit dose increments, as well as a 60-unit maximum per injection.

The pen is suitable for patients suffering from diabetes mellitus type 1 and type 2.

The pen is durable and offers reliable day-to-day performance.

How Does Novopen 4 (Novo-Nordisk) Work and Which Are the Active Ingredients

Novopen 4 is a pen that supports precise and steady delivery of insulin with 1-unit increments and a clear dosage window. It does not contain insulin, but it uses it as an active component for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Novopen 4 does not change how fast the insulin starts working, so the duration and the onset depend on the insulin found in the cartridge.

Dosage and Administration

The exact daily dose of insulin must be determined by your doctor.

How to prepare Novopen 4:

  • First, pull off the cap. Then unscrew and remove the cartridge holder from the mechanical part.

  • Push in the priston rod by pressing its head in until it stops.

  • If you are using an insulin suspension, always mix it before use.

  • Insert the cartridge into the cartridge holder. The color-coded cap is supposed to go in first.

  • Screw the device together.

  • Use an alcohol swab to wipe the front rubber stopper and screw on a new disposable needle. It is advised to use NovoFine disposable needles with Novopen 4.

  • Pull off the outer and inner needle caps and dispose of them.

  • Do an air shot before each injection.

  • Pull out the dose button and select 4 units if you are using a new cartridge or 1 unit if it is a cartridge that was already in use.

  • Hold the pen with the needle facing upwards.

  • Gently tap the cartridge holder with your finger to let out any air bubbles that might collect at the top of the cartridge.

  • Press the dose button until you hear or feel a click. At that moment, the display will return to 0.

  • This is when a drop of insulin must appear at the tip of the needle.

  • If you do not see the drop, repeat the process a few times. If it does not appear after 6 times, do not use the pen.

Selecting the dose and injecting the medicine:

  • To select the dose, pull out the dose button and turn it until your needed dose shows on the dose indicator.

  • If you choose a dose that is different from the one you need, turn the dose button again until you find the right dose.

  • The maximum dose you can take in one injection is 60 units.

  • Give the injection exactly as your doctor has instructed you.

  • In order to inject, press the dose button completely in until you hear or feel a click.

  • Leave the needle under the skin for at least 6 seconds and then take it out.

  • The display will now show 0. If 0 (zero) does not appear, you did not get the full dose.

  • You may see a few drops of insulin at the tip of the needle once you take it out. This has no effect on the insulin dose that you received.

  • Dispose of the needle as it is intended for single use only.

  • Replace the pen cap and remove the needle after each use.

Device maintenance:

  • Do not wash, lubricate, or soak Novopen 4 in water.

  • Clean the outside of the device with a damp cloth.

  • Use a dry cloth to clean off dirt and dust.

Storage Information:

  • Once you insert a PenFill cartridge into Novopen 4, store it at a temperature between 15°C and 30°C.

  • Keep the product safe from water, dust, dirt, and direct sunlight.

  • Keep the pen out of the sight and reach of children.

Side Effects (Adverse Reactions)

The following side effects can be caused by Novopen 4:

  • Injection-site skin reactions, such as bruising, redness, mild pain, itching, or small lumps.

  • Hypoglycemia from insulin therapy, followed by sweating, shakiness, headache, hunger, and a fast heartbeat.

  • Skin changes when the pen is used repeatedly at the same spot. To avoid it, rotate injection sites.

Serious reactions are linked to insulin therapy itself, and not the pen. Consult with your doctor if you experience any severe or persistent reactions.

Precautions and Warnings

Follow these precautions for maximum safety:

  • Novopen 4 is ideal for patients who need 1-unit dosing increments of up to 60 units per injection.

  • Patients with manual dexterity difficulties or vision problems may need additional device training or other forms of support.

  • The device should not be shared with others.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, diabetic retinopathy, or low potassium levels.

Drug Interactions

The pen itself does not interact with other medicines. For possible interactions, check the instructions provided with your insulin cartridge.
