Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that targets anaerobic bacteria and protozoa; the kinds of microbes that thrive without oxygen. It’s commonly used to treat:

• Intra-abdominal infections, such as abscesses and peritonitis

• Vaginal infections, including endometritis, vaginal yeast infections, and vaginal abscesses

• Bone and joint infections caused by anaerobic organisms

• Lower respiratory tract infections

• Central nervous system infections like brain abscesses

• Septicemia (blood infections) due to anaerobes

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Bacterial endocarditis

• Trichomoniasis, a common sexually transmitted infection

• Colorectal surgery prophylaxis to prevent infection during or after surgery

This IV formulation is generally used in hospitalized patients or in cases where oral therapy isn’t feasible.
